Seasonal variations of fungi in the sputa and throats of asthmatic patients

In a 10-yr survey 532 asthmatics, 120 healthy persons and 245 non-asthmatic patients were tested. Fungi were isolated significantly more often in asthmatics than in the control groups. Aspergillus, Penicillium and yeasts were found significantly more often in the sputa and in the throat of asthmatics than in non-asthmatics. Candida albicans was a secondary invader in asthma. The isolation rate of fungi in asthmatics was influenced by season.
