The number of cases of chlamydiosis in psittacine birds from various areas of the USA are reported (1978-1983). Serotesting of 3485 birds by direct complement-fixation method detected antibody titres of: 8 in 340 (9.8%); 16 in 333 (9.6%); 32 in 309 (8.9%); 64 in 263 (7.5%); 128 in 110 (3.1%); and 256 in 76 (2.2%). 476 (13.7%) birds were considered to have active Chlamydia psittaci infections. The highest percentage of those were: 24.8% (32/129) cockatiels ( 16 titre); 17.8% (236/1328) Amazon parrots ( 64 titre); 17.8% (236/606) macaws ( 64 titre). Chlamydia was isolated from 126 (30.4%) of 414 tissue specimens and from 51 (4.9%) of 1035 cloacal swab/faecal specimens. Direct microscopic examination was reliable for detecting chlamydiae in 83.35% of tissue specimens that were culture-positive. The need for more rapid diagnostic procedures and the possible public health hazards of infected psittacine birds are discussed.
