This third part of the article looks at how gardens in the Hiji area of Hase village, Japan, have developed. It examines how land use has changed over the past 20 to 30 years, looking specifically at the change from farmland to housing land, and how this has caused a transition from 'working' plots to 'pleasure' gardens, and an increase in the popularity of gardening as a hobby and leisure activity. This new form of garden emphasizes the change to a more modern lifestyle and increasing awareness of the importance of leisure.
