Patients (46) with chronic obstructive bronchitis were studied to reveal the lysozyme content in bronchial secretions, saliva and serum as a function of the phase of the disease and the clinical course. An attempt was also made to establish the clinical and prognostic value of quantitative fluctuations in lysozyme in these materials. Lysozyme content was lower in patients with exacerbated chronic bronchitis than in patients with chronic bronchitis in the period of improvement or remission. When lysozyme content was elevated in bronchial washing, a favorable course of the disease was observed. When lysozyme levels did not increase or decreased, a more lingering exacerbation of the chronic bronchitis was observed.
