The current status of forest pathology in South Africa is briefly sketched using examples of native and exotic (fungal) pathogens. The discussion of future prospects covers aspects such as quarantine, education and research in relation to the expanding role of the South African forest industry in the country's economy, and the consequent requirements for optimal productivity from limited land resources, and a reduction of losses from disease.
