Between 1985 and 1998 the Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that the proportion of women with AIDS among all AIDS cases reported in the United States increased from 7 percent to 23 percent. Women constitute 30 percent of all new HIV infections each year. A disproportionate number of African American and Hispanic women comprise 77 percent of AIDS cases reported by women. Approximately three quarters of these infections are linked to heterosexual transmission, in combination with injection drug use. A majority of these reports were originally registered as HIV cases, without regard to risk behaviors, but have been reclassified subsequently as heterosexually transferred.
