The demand for managed care is growing at a phenomenal rate, and insurance and hospital corporations are now entering the market. With this influx of new providers, however, price-based competition will intensify and cost containment will become key to survival. This article traces the growing demand for managed care through the development of HMOs and PPOs that can maintain their market share in a competitive environment.
