Data obtained during 1999 from 391 persons (259 women and 132 men) from 12 refugee camps in Jordan were evaluated. 60.1% of men and 61.8% of women considered wife beating acceptable under at least one of 8 hypothetical situations/behaviours. Younger men and women (aged 20-29 years) were more likely to condone beatings than their older counterparts. The association between acceptance of beating and age was significant for women (P=0.03), but not for men (P=0.25).
