The efficacy of nifedipine for the management of hypertensive crises in uremic patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis was assessed. The drug was administered orally to 7 patients and sublingually to 8, always in 10 mg doses. Pressure values were normalized in all patients. Sublingual administration of nifedipine led to a more rapid response. The effect lasted up to 5 h; there was no rebound.
