The influence of eicosanoids (the biologically active metabolites of arachidonic acid) on the normal and neoplastic cell proliferation, carcinogenesis and metastasis formation was discussed. The data presented indicate the perspectives of the application of drugs modulating the arachidonic acid metabolism in the oncological therapy. The drugs which inhibit both cyclooxygenase and lipooxygenase activities in combination with prostaglandins exerting the antitumor effects (like prostacyclin and PGD2) could be particularly useful.
