This study was performed to examine an effect of the attentional sound on presaccadic activity of human brain evoked potential resulting from visually guided saccadic eye movement. The evoked cortical potentials were recorded at a parietal and occipital region in 7 normal subjects. A positive component of presaccadic evoked potentials appeared at .apprx. 50 ms before saccade but the latency of this potential from visual target stimuli varied with the saccadic latency. When subjects were given an attentional buzzer sound at 2-3 s before visual target stimuli appeared, both the peak latency of the presaccadic positive component and saccadic latency were shorter than when the were not given the buzzer. When the visual target stimuli were counted without saccades or were ignored by subjects, a component of cortical potentials was seen at the same latency as that of the presaccadic positive component, but its amplitude was smaller than that of the presaccadic positive component. Apparently, attentional mechanism contributed to the cortical presaccadic activity associated with visually guided saccades.
