The officinal mugwort, Artemisia vulgaris L., is commonly confounded with a naturalized mugwort, A. verlotiorum Lamotte. The two species, which present very near botanical characters, are clearly differentiated by the physicochemical characters of their essential oil. A. verlotiorum, most odorous, is richest in essential oil and contains much more thuyone than A. vulgaris.
