In order to evaluate the incidence of Thalassemia among the Italian population, the results of a study on 966 8th grade students from Bolzano are reported. Thirty-one students (3.2%) were found to be thalassemic: 25 (2.6%) beta-thalassemic and 6 (0.6%) alpha-thalassemic. All were heterozygous. The latest census in 1981 showed that the population of Italian extraction in South-Tyrol consisted of 123,695 people. Therefore it would be likely to expect 3216 cases of beta- and 742 of alpha-thalassemia. At the present time, only 896 thalassemics are known and catalogued in our Service Center.
