Use of the lower rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap in breast reconstruction

This flap allows reconstruction of the breast without recourse to an implant, but with a very natural shape and consistence of the breast. The tissula structure of female anatomy is considerable, especially in corpulent women, but it is also sufficient for the creation of a musculocutaneous flap, even in slim women, provided that the stomach is sufficiently lax. The donor site is similar to that used in the exeresis of an abdominal plasty, although the scar is more easily concealed than in the case of a dorsalis major flap. The parietal repair is performed without a flap, and we have registered no secondary eventrations. Twelve breast repairs have been performed using this method. In eleven cases the repair was performed some time after the mammectomy (7 cases for patients who had undergone radiotherapy, and 4 cases for patients presenting with well, but insufficiently, vascularized teguments), and in one case it was performed to cover a wide defect following the mammectomy.
