Antibody activity against intermediate filaments in Waldenström macroglobulinemia

The serum of six patients affected by Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia was analyzed by immunofluorescence microscopy on different tissue culture cells. Two of these sera showed antibody activity against the cytoskeleton and in particular against the intermediate filaments of the vimentin type. Evidence for such specificity was obtained by decorating perinuclear whorls which are known to be specifically generated by colchicine treatment on vimentin intermediate filaments. The possible role of this antibody activity is discussed in relation to the pathogenesis of the disease.
