The paper addresses the sizable gap in the literature by exploring the new movement of Basotho women to work on the farms in South Africa, a perfectly legal movement which both mirrors and is closely related to the migration of male contract workers to the mines. The paper also seeks to address broader questions about the relationships among labour markets, household restructuring, and cross-border migration in post apartheid South Africa. The paper is based on research conducted in Lesotho and South Africa during 1997 and 1998.
