This article briefly discusses the works of American photojournalist Andrew Petkun, which show and communicate the reality of people in Africa living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) through photographs. His works have been displayed in several institutions and included in a museum exhibit called "Hope for Humanity: The Quest for an AIDS Vaccine". One of his photograph included in the exhibit showing a mother with HIV and her child is presented. It is suggested that public health professionals use images and other artistic expressions, along with science-based communication interventions, to help raise awareness, increase empathy and inspire others to make a difference.
