Monoclonal antibodies directed against tumor-associated antigens may be useful for diagnostic purposes. Firstly, monoclonal antibodies can be used to ensure more sensitive detection of the extent of metastatic disease. This aspect will be discussed on the basis of experience with a monoclonal antibody (MOC-1) directed against a small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC)-associated antigen. Secondly, monoclonal antibodies directed against a variety of SCLC-associated antigens may help to establish a reliable, more differentiated diagnosis of lung cancer. The relevance and perspectives for such an application of monoclonal antibodies will be discussed.
