A class of R alleles, of which Rr and its mutant Rg derivatives are representative, gives a mottled distribution of anthocyanin in the aleurone layer of the endosperm in crosses of RR with colourless rr plants when RR is the pollen parent, but solidly-coloured aleurone when rr is the pollen parent. When R is transmitted paternally in one or two doses, the aleurone phenotype is mottled and if R is transmitted maternally in one, two or four doses the aleurone is solidly coloured.
