Part of a special section on the history of food and nutrition in emergency relief. A discussion on the historical development of malnutrition concepts. Translating findings in research units and academic centers into practical guidelines used at field level appears to depend on chance meetings between those academics who are still active in research on severe malnutrition and humanitarian workers. As history demonstrates, it can take many years for the results of research in orphan diseases associated with malnutrition to have any effect on treatment practices, and the international organizations are not timely or effective in disseminating the necessary knowledge or skills.
