The issue draws together a range of perspectives from people who have been active in recent debates on men and masculinities in Gender and Development (GAD). Arising principally from presentations given at a two-day seminar on the politics of the personal at the University of East Anglia in June 1999, the issue seeks to explore some of the implications and some of the ambivalence that surrounds the new masculinities agenda. In doing so, the issue seeks to open up the debate to other perspectives and other voices, within a terrain that is increasingly contested. The introduction draws on discussions at the UEA workshop and the papers in the issue, to highlight some of the challenges of moves to involve men in GAD.
