Prevalence of night blindness amongst pregnant women of urban slum communities in Delhi: a pilot study

A study was conducted to assess the prevalence of night blindness among pregnant women attending an antenatal clinic in New Delhi, India. A total of 829 pregnant women aged 17-40 years were enrolled in the study. Findings revealed that the prevalence of night blindness among pregnant women was 4.8%. Nearly 2.7% of pregnant women reported experiencing night blindness during their previous pregnancies. The dietary intake analysis showed that 57% of pregnant women were consuming less than 50% of vitamin A as compared with recommended dietary allowances. This study highlights night blindness as a public health problem among pregnant women of urban slum communities in New Delhi.
