Arterial blood was withdrawn and pumped extracorporeally from a femoral artery and re-injected into the aortic root, in 15 anesthetized dogs. Extracorporeal flow was varied, at random, between 0.1 and 1.0 times the control cardiac output, but a high bypass flow could be obtained in only a few dogs. The changes in vascular pressures and cardiac output were small, showing that proximal aortic re-injection did not have a detrimental effect on the left ventricle.
