Dietary survey in Beijing in 1983

As part of a WHO study of risk factors in coronary heart disease the dietary intake of 73 urban and 92 rural residents of Beijing, China was studied. Dietary intake for 3 consecutive days was recorded using 24-h recall method. Average daily protein intake was 82.5 and 76.2 g in the urban and rural groups, respectively. Intakes were of fat 88.1 and 66.3 g, carbohydrate 361.6 and 366.7 g, energy 2569 and 2368 kcal, cholesterol 334.5 and 124.8 mg, crude fibre 6.4 and 6.5 g, ascorbic acid 79.3 and 11.0 mg and carotene 4.6 and 1.6 mg. Ratio of saturated to polyunsaturated fat was 2.6:1 and 2.7:1, respectively. Average sodium intake was 5.6 and 6.2 g, equivalent to 14.2 and 15.7 g salt daily. The results are compared with dietary intakes in USA.
