Study of the disease course in 102 patients with blood disease after splenectomy has shown that these patients are susceptible to infectious complications despite improvement of the blood characteristics. The intimate immunological mechanisms that are responsible for decreased resistance to Pneumococcus infection in patients after splenectomy are analysed and methods of treatment and prevention of these complications discussed.
