Immunologic status of children after splenectomy in trauma

Immune status was studied in 18 children aged 6-14 years, in varying terms after splenectomy (from 4 months to 6 years). Posttraumatic splenectomy produced disorders in the ratios in the blood leucocytic formula, raised the total number of lymphocytes and the absolute count of T- and B-lymphocytes. Impairment of the proliferative activity of T-lymphocytes in response to mitogens, lowering of the antibody production and decrease of the phagocytic activity of neutrophils and monocytes were also recorded. The suppression of the immune system after splenectomy was more pronounced in the children of 6-10 years of age.
