Distribution patterns of the intracellular contractile filaments were studied by EM. Arrangement of contractile filaments in resting cells was different from that in moving cells. In moving state, such as locomotion, adhesion or phagocytosis, aggregation of the filaments was increased in the presence of A-23187, but absent in the presence of cytochalasin B. The filamentous endings terminated in the cell membrane, and the terminating points were arranged in a defininits pattern. Contractile filaments, on conjugating with the cell membrane, apparently produce cell movement and membrane ruffling as an effect of partial contraction of the filament network. The arrangment of the filaments in myelocytes differed from that in monocytes. In the maturation of the myelocytic cell series the filaments of the younger cells were less developed and less aggregated. However in the monocytic cell series many filaments could be observed in the younger cells. The characteristic motile function of each cell apparently is determined by the amount and the arrangement of the filaments.
