In this review the characteristics of the development and function of the abomasum are discussed, with particular reference to the pathophysiology of diarrhoea in colostrum-fed and milk-fed calves. Factors predisposing calves to abomasal diseases are disturbances of gastric secretion, digestion and motility. Changes in secretion within the isolated small abomasal pouch, caused in large and small ruminants by circadian rhythm, hunger, pyrogens and histamine, are discussed. Abomasal ulcers are also discussed.
