This article discusses the purpose and significance of fortifying sugar with vitamin A, implementation of sugar fortification by Zambia Sugar Plc (the largest sugar producer in Zambia), process of sugar fortification in Zambia, initial expenditure for sugar fortification, training and orientation of staff on food fortication, Statutory Instrument on sugar which mandates regulations for the quality, safety and labelling standards for sugar, preliminary research to determine how consumers would respond to the idea of sugar fortification, launching of vitamin A-fortified sugar and challenges posed by sugar fortication (cost of the fortificant, packaging of sugar and monitoring of sugar quality).
