The changing tastes of the emerging middle class in China have impacted upon the food markets and have led to significant increases in food imports, which have undermined the country's self sufficiency ethos. Investments being made in China by multinational American, European and Asian agrochemical companies are changing the face of the agrarian sector and the government is having to reassess it policy towards the sector.
