An office technique for examining the effect of body fat distribution on insulin resistance during gestation was evaluated. The adiposity-independent predictive value for insulin resistance of skinfold caliper and ultrasound measurements of the distribution of subcutaneous adipose tissue and ultrasound-derived measurements of visceral adiposity was explored in 16 primiparous girls aged 13-19 years. The results showed that skinfold caliper measurements of the subscapular skinfold thickness and ultrasonic measurements of the costal skinfold thickness are better predictors than body mass index of maternal insulin resistance.
