On the basis of own research the authors explain some problems of classification, morphology, epidemiology, clinical signs and surgical treatment of various jaw cysts. Important cases are the keratocysts of the jaws because of their tendency to recur and become malignant depending on their histological structure. Altogether 499 patients were treated at the clinic of Maxillo-Facial-Surgery of the Karl-Marx-University who suffered from cysts of the jaws. More than 60% of the cysts were radicular ones. Other kinds of jaw cysts namely pseudocysts and fissural ones are of less importance and are less frequent as radicular cysts.
