Guidelines for the assessment and management of sexually transmitted diseases in children under the age of 18 years are presented. The principles and issues to be considered when caring for sexually active young people and the medical responsibilities of health professionals are outlined. Signs and symptoms of sexual abuse or sexual assault are summarized. Child prostitution is emphasized. Consent for medical treatment, confidentiality and child protection issues are discussed. Risk factors, examination and sampling techniques, diagnostic methods and screening are described. Specific sexually transmitted infections are considered including Chlamydia trachomatis, gonorrhoea, anogenital warts, Trichomonas vaginalis, herpes simplex virus, syphilis, human immunodeficiency virus and bacterial vaginosis.
