Carbonic anhydrase polymorphism in cattle and swine

Using starch-gel electrophoresis, the occurrence of carbonic anhydrase polymorphism in 3 breeds of Danish cattle was investigated. The results from typing 283 dam-offspring pairs were in accordance with the genetic theory that the 2 polymorphic components are controlled by a pair of co-dominant allelic genes. An observed tendency to an excess of heterozygotes is discussed. The locus controlling the carbonic anhydrase components appears not to be sex-linked, and close to moderate linkage to the B, C, FV and R'S' blood-group loci and the locus controlling amylase polymorphism can be ruled out. In chimeric twins, the serologically distinct red cell populations may also be different in their content of carbonic anhydrase components.
