Painless osteoid osteoma (or initially painless) . Apropos of 2 phalangeal cases. Review of the literature

Two cases of osteoid osteoma of the distal phalanges are reported. Presentation was monodigital clubbing, totally painless in one case and initially painless in the other. These two cases are compared with other reports of painless osteoid osteoma found in the literature (19 cases). The reason for the absence of pain is discussed. It appears that painless osteoid osteoma is generally revealed either by swelling of the surrounding soft tissues in superficial osteomas, or by a limp in osteomas of a lower limb. Thus, detection of a painless osteoid osteoma is probably not related to a particular type, but rather to its location which promotes some clinical sign other than pain, and enables the diagnosis-almost by chance-, perhaps before the onset of pain.
