The author reviews the incidence of onchocerciasis (caused by Onchocerca volvulus) in the Neotropical Region and discusses the ecological characteristics of the foci of infection and the vectors incriminated in transmission. The geographical distribution of the foci and known vectors in each area are shown on a map. Some 12 species of Simulium are incriminated in transmission; the status of some as vectors of primary or secondary importance is known to vary with the biogeographical region. The countries discussed are Guatemala, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador.
