A total of 16,070 strains of bacteria were isolated from wounds of patients in the hospital of the Plzen Medical Faculty between 1980 and 1983. Staphylococcus aureus were found most frequently (24.78 per cent), followed by Escherichia coli (13.53 per cent), Staph. epidermidis (10.73 per cent), Streptococcus faecalis (10.35 per cent), Proteus mirabilis (7.37 per cent), Enterobacter spp. (5.86 per cent), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Str. viridans (4.39 per cent each). During the four years, the sensitivity toward antibiotics has changed in many cases, and this not only in the sense of a deteriorated sensitivity. Opposing resistance trends have been found even in related species (Enterobacteriaceae) at the same place (hospital) and under the same selective pressure (use of antibiotics). Significant differences were found to exist between two hospitals in the same city, between individual departments of one and the same hospital and even among strains of bacteria, which were isolated from differing types of the infected material. Significant differences have also been found in quantitative tests among the individual districts of Western Bohemia.
