Histopathological examination is essential to establish the diagnosis of some tumors with a clinically deceptive appearance (e.g., pigmented, ulcerated or budding tumors, or pseudo-angiomatous tumors) and the prognosis of malignant melanocytic or epithelial tumors, whose evolution is dependent on the histological typing and their degree of invasion, factors which cannot be evaluated clinically. In all cases the quality of the analysis will depend on close collaboration between the plastic surgeon and the pathologist. Practical advice concerning the packing of specimens and their dispatch to the laboratory are given. The satisfactory conservation of the specimens for histopathological examination will depend on the respect of these precautions.
