Disseminated cutaneous hemangiosarcoma in a young dog

Disseminated cutaneous haemangiosarcoma was diagnosed in a 1-year-old dog despite the benign histological appearance of most tumour foci. An initial, raised, 3-cm diameter, erythematous skin lesion over the left tarsus expanded over a 6-week period to involve tissues of the hindlimb, flank, axilla, and caudal portion of the abdomen. During a 3-month observation period, the dog's behaviour, haemogram, serum chemical profile, and thoracic radiographs remained normal while the neoplasm developed in 40% of the skin and subcutis. At PM examination, there were spongy, dark-red tissue masses throughout the hindlimb fascia, falciform ligament, mediastinal pleura, perineal fat, sublumbar muscles, and fat of the pelvic canal. Neoplastic lesions were notably absent in lung, spleen, liver, and heart. This case is similar in several respects to cutaneous angiosarcoma of children and young adults. The case emphasizes the importance of good clinical histories for the accurate interpretation of surgical pathology specimens.
