Biochemical values were estimated in blood sampled from 3 healthy men before and after they ran distances of 3, 5, 10 and 20 miles, all at an average pace of 7.5 min per mile. There were increases in plasma glucose, urea, creatinine, bilirubin and iron and in ketone body production. The importance of those changes for persons preparing for or taking part in long distance running is discussed.
