Prenatal mortality induced by irradiation of spermatozoa

BALB/c mice were given testis irradiation of 400 or 1200 R of X-rays, and immediately afterwards were each mated with 3 virgin . As a control, similar were mated with non-irradiated . In 164 and 153 mated to given 400 and 1200 R resp., and in 348 controls, pre-implantation embryo mortality was 27.5, 47.5 and 22.0% resp., and post-implantation mortality 21.8 and 28.1 and 6.6%. An examination of early embryos indicated that the increase in prenatal mortality due to irradiation was related to the presence of embryo abnormalities, the most frequent of which was the presence of micronuclei.
