Trends in the mortality of men aged 30-70 are analyzed using data for the German Democratic Republic. The data indicate that between 1952 and 1981, male mortality declined for all age groups from 30 to 65. Comparisons are made with data for other European countries, and the relationship of these trends to various causes of death is discussed.
