A set of long-range objectives for improving the health of man and the cost-effectiveness of national health care was suggested. Biomedical communications include the interface and interaction between knowledge and the medical and health care communities. Three relatively distinct categories of biomedical knowledge are identified for research program: biomedical literature, medical data banks and professional expertise. Biomedical information and computer sciences should organize and systematize biomedical knowledge. Jointly with medicine they should utilize this knowledge via computer-based information systems which will aid health care decision makers and practitioners.
