Infant feeding practices in a rural community of west Bengal

Data on breast-feeding and weaning practices were obtained by interview from lactating mothers of 57 infants from 2 villages in West Bengal, India. All infants were breast fed within 24 h of delivery. Mean duration of breast feeding was up to 3 months in 17, 3 to 6 months in 14, 6 to 9 months in 13 and 9 to 12 months in 13 infants. Artificial milk was given to 35 infants of insufficient human milk or desire to give the infant more food. Only 22 infants were given homemade solid or semi-solid food during the first year of life (usually soft rice and vegetables).
