Reproductive health services and intimate partner violence: shaping a pragmatic response in Sub-Saharan Africa

This paper discusses the prevalence of intimate partner violence in Sub-Saharan Africa, the effects of partner violence on reproductive health, and the role of reproductive health providers in helping to identify, support and refer victims of partner violence. The need for these health providers to first confront their own biases, misconceptions and fears about violence against women to ensure that women are not further victimized during the process of consultation and disclosure is emphasized. Strategies that can further improve the provision of health support and care to violence victims, such as enhancing the skills of health providers through improved training, improving the documentation of partner violence cases, and establishing an intersectoral collaboration and referral (involving other agencies such as the police and social welfare), are considered. The ways of addressing intimate partner violence according to type of provider are outlined.
