Electronic planimetry was used to determine the average area of the mitral value in 30 normal adult hearts (23 males and 7 females) as well as the area of the orifice of the mitral valve. A correlation was established between the valve area and the number of tendinous stems and points of contact between the chordae and the different zones of the mitral valve. [Clinical applications in cardiac surgery are discussed.].
