In addition to exploring the economic impact of HIV/AIDS on children and families, this chapter also describes coping mechanisms that households use in response to economic stress. Of particular interest are the ways that some households move from coping over the short term to successfully adapting or permanently changing their mix of strategies to fulfill their basic needs. The chapter also discusses the role of community safety nets in this mix of strategies employed by households in crisis. Finally, it describes project approaches that can bolster household and community safety nets.
