There were 15 cases demonstrating mucocele, which occurred in appendices at Veterans General Hospital [Taiwan] from 1980 to 1983. The incidence of mucocele in surgically removed appendices was 0.9% in 1667 cases. Of these, 2 cases were associated with pseudomyxoma peritonei. The preoperative diagnosis of this disease is difficult, but today non-invasive sonography as a diagnostic aid can improve in distinguishing mucocele from other far more likely disorders when it is combined with bedside investigations. Recently 2 cases were diagnosed with the aid of sonography. Simple appendectomy is an adequate therapy for unruptured mucocele of the appendix with no untoward sequelae. If the mucocele has ruptured and pseudomyxoma peritonei results, appendectomy, omentectomy, removal of accessible masses and i.p. irrigation with diluted cyclophosphamide solution, in addition to oophorectomy in older females were performed.
