Maternal and child health care in the former Soviet Republics of Central Asia: lessons learnt during project evaluation

In 1995 a pilot project was set up to improve the obstetrical and neonatal care in hospitals in 2 districts each of 5 countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan). The project resulted in improved neonatal care and more breast feeding, but further improvements in obstetrical care are needed. It was not possible to evaluate the efficacy of the project as a whole because of the lack of basic data. Factors affecting its extension to a national level are discussed, but low economic support for the state health services limits the potential value of the project and its possible expansion.
