Various aspects of termination of pregnancy by the vacuum-aspiration method

This report is based on 5 years' experience with the use of vacuum aspiration for terminating early pregnancy in hospital gynecology departments. 6463 vacuum aspirations were performed on women whose menstrual periods were 7-21 days late. Medical examination of the patients included a progesterone test. In 93% of the cases, histological examination of the aspirate confirmed the pregnancy. Compared with uterine curettage, vacuum aspiration causes fewer complications and reduces blood loss and uterine trauma. Due to these and other advantages, the method is recommended for wider application in gynecological practice.
